Are violins the same instrument as fiddles?

Basically, yes. If you want to get real picky, sometimes there are slight differences, but not enough to make them a different instrument. For example, fiddlers often prefer strings with a steel core, while classical violinists prefer ones with a synthetic core, or sometimes fiddlers prefer a slightly flatter bridge to make it easier to play multiple notes. But these are really just preferences.
