Why do the same people who condone homosexuality, ridicule drag queens and transvestites?

One is a sexual orientation and the other is a matter of gender confusion. I feel that gender is a petty thing to base your identity off of or define yourself by. That's my only issue with transvestites and the like. Ridicule is pathetic and usually more a projection of the person's own insecurities than anything.
