Eddie Izzard Question?

I've recently become a fan of the comedian and I'm just wondering when and why he stopped being a Transvestite. Because I really admired him for his bravery to do all of his shows like that and I'm going to watch him soon in "All the Queen's Men" and it's rather confusing. From what I know he was a transvestite from the early 90s until the early 2000s. Did I miss the change over?
